Sample questions with answers

Try each question before you open the answer. Written answers show what a full-marks response needs to include.

  1. Question 1. Classification and biodiversityMultiple choice

    A frog is an…

    1. AInsect
    2. BReptile
    3. CAmphibian
    4. DInvertebrate
    Show answer

    C. Amphibian

Moist skin, young (tadpoles) live in water.

  2. Question 2. Ecosystems and food websMultiple choice

A producer has 5000 kJ. About how much reaches the primary consumer?

    1. A500 kJ
    2. B5000 kJ
    3. C50 kJ
    4. D4500 kJ
    Show answer

    A. 500 kJ

    10%.

  3. Question 3. Ecosystems and food webs: food chains and food webs3 marks

In the food chain grass → wallaby → dingo, predict and explain what would happen to the grass if dingoes were removed.

Show model answer and marking criteria

Model answer. Without dingoes, fewer wallabies would be eaten, so the wallaby population would increase. The larger wallaby population would eat more grass, so the grass would decrease. Eventually there may not be enough grass and the wallaby population could fall again.

    A full-marks answer:

    • Wallaby numbers would increase because they are no longer being eaten by dingoes
    • More wallabies would eat more grass
    • So the amount of grass would decrease (and wallabies might later decline from lack of food)
  4. Question 4. Earth, Sun and MoonMultiple choice

High tide is at 2:00 am. The next high tide is at about…

    1. A2:25 pm
    2. B2:00 pm
    3. C8:12 am
    4. D1:35 pm
    Show answer

    A. 2:25 pm

    +12 h 25 min.

  5. Question 5. Earth, Sun and Moon: Phases of the Moon3 marks

Explain why we see phases of the Moon.

Show model answer and marking criteria

Model answer. The Moon does not make its own light; the Sun always lights up one half of it. As the Moon orbits Earth over about 29.5 days, we see different amounts of that lit half. At new moon the lit side faces away from us so the Moon looks dark, and at full moon the whole lit half faces Earth.

    A full-marks answer:

    • The Moon reflects light from the Sun; half of it is always lit
    • As the Moon orbits Earth, we see different amounts of its lit half
    • Gives an example, e.g. at new moon the lit side faces away from Earth; at full moon we see the whole lit side
  6. Question 6. Forces and simple machinesMultiple choice

    A 50 N force pushes right and a 20 N force pushes left. The net force is…

    1. A30 N left
    2. B30 N right
    3. C70 N right
    4. D70 N left
    Show answer

    B. 30 N right

How to study Year 7 Science

Learn the key terms exactly, because Science questions often give a mark for the right word. In calculations, write the formula, substitute the numbers with units, then give the answer with its unit. For investigations, be ready to name the independent, dependent and controlled variables.

In Lock in, every Science topic has short notes, then flashcards that use spaced repetition: rate each card Again, Hard, Good or Easy and it comes back just before you would forget it. Practice questions come in three levels, Foundation, Standard and Complex. Three right in a row moves you up a level, and two wrong moves you back.

Press Study for me and the app builds a 15 to 20 minute session from the cards that are due, the mistakes that are due and questions on your weakest topics. Anything you get wrong comes back 1, 3 and 7 days later until you get it right. When an exam is close, sit a timed practice exam with AI marking.
