Sample questions with answers

Try each question before you open the answer. Written answers show what a full-marks response needs to include.

  1. Question 1. Atoms and the periodic tableMultiple choice

An atom has 8 protons, 8 neutrons and 8 electrons. Its mass number is…

    1. A16
    2. B24
    3. C0
    4. D8
    Show answer

    A. 16

    Protons + neutrons.

  2. Question 2. Chemical reactionsMultiple choice

How many oxygen atoms are in 3CO₂?

    1. A5
    2. B6
    3. C3
    4. D2
    Show answer

    B. 6

    3 × 2.

  3. Question 3. Chemical reactions: reactions of acids and neutralisation3 marks

Name the salt formed and write the word equation when magnesium reacts with sulfuric acid. Describe a test for the gas produced.

Show model answer and marking criteria

Model answer. Magnesium + sulfuric acid → magnesium sulfate + hydrogen. The salt is magnesium sulfate. To test for hydrogen, hold a lit splint at the mouth of the test tube: the gas burns with a squeaky “pop”.

    A full-marks answer:

    • Salt: magnesium sulfate
    • Word equation: magnesium + sulfuric acid → magnesium sulfate + hydrogen
    • Test: hold a lit splint at the mouth of the test tube; hydrogen burns with a squeaky pop
  4. Question 4. Energy and electricityMultiple choice

    Resistance is measured in…

    1. AVolts (V)
    2. BOhms (Ω)
    3. CAmps (A)
    4. DWatts (W)
    Show answer

    B. Ohms (Ω)

  5. Question 5. Energy and electricity: electrical power and energy3 marks

A 2.4 kW heater is used for 5 hours a day. Electricity costs 30 cents per kWh. Calculate the energy used per day and the cost of running it for a week.

Show model answer and marking criteria

    Model answer. Energy per day = P × t = 2.4 kW × 5 h = 12 kWh. Cost per day = 12 × 30 = 360 cents. Cost per week = 7 × 360 = 2520 cents, which is 25.20 dollars.

    A full-marks answer:

    • Energy per day: E = P × t = 2.4 × 5 = 12 kWh
    • Cost per day = 12 × 30 = 360 cents
    • Cost per week = 7 × 360 = 2520 cents (25.20 dollars)
  6. Question 6. Waves: sound, light and the EM spectrumMultiple choice

    A wave travels at 20 m/s with wavelength 4 m. Its frequency is…

    1. A24 Hz
    2. B5 Hz
    3. C16 Hz
    4. D80 Hz
    Show answer

    B. 5 Hz

    f = v ÷ λ.

How to study Year 9 Science

Learn the key terms exactly, because Science questions often give a mark for the right word. In calculations, write the formula, substitute the numbers with units, then give the answer with its unit. For investigations, be ready to name the independent, dependent and controlled variables.

In Lock in, every Science topic has short notes, then flashcards that use spaced repetition: rate each card Again, Hard, Good or Easy and it comes back just before you would forget it. Practice questions come in three levels, Foundation, Standard and Complex. Three right in a row moves you up a level, and two wrong moves you back.

Press Study for me and the app builds a 15 to 20 minute session from the cards that are due, the mistakes that are due and questions on your weakest topics. Anything you get wrong comes back 1, 3 and 7 days later until you get it right. When an exam is close, sit a timed practice exam with AI marking.
