An AI study app for Years 7–12 and uni

Lock in works out what you don’t know yet and has you practise exactly that. It marks your written answers, explains your mistakes and runs timed practice exams, across Maths, English, Science, History, Geography and PDHPE.

What it does

Most AI study tools are a chat box: you have to know what to ask. Lock in starts from a course instead. Every subject is split into topics written for a year group, and each topic has three parts.

  • Short notes that cover what you need for the topic, without the padding of a textbook chapter.
  • Flashcards with spaced repetition. Rate each card Again, Hard, Good or Easy, and it comes back just before you would forget it.
  • Practice questions at three levels, Foundation, Standard and Complex, from quick multiple choice to written answers worth several marks.

On top of that sit the parts that use AI: marking for written answers, an explanation when you get something wrong, and Ask AI for questions about the topic you are on.

You can also bring your own material. Paste your class notes or drop in a PDF or text file, and the AI turns your notes into a study guide with flashcards, an exam-style quiz and written questions with a marking guide, ready to practise like any other topic.

How it adapts to you

Every answer you give updates a mastery score for that topic. Recent answers count for more than old ones, so the score follows where you are now, not where you were a month ago.

Press Study for me and the app builds a 15 to 20 minute session: the flashcards that are due, the mistakes that are due, and questions on your weakest topics at the right level. Get three right in a row and the questions step up a level. Get two wrong and they step back down.

Every question you get wrong is saved to your mistakes list and comes back 1, 3 and 7 days later until you get it right three times. That is how a mistake turns into something you actually know.

Lock in also shows a countdown to each exam and writes a day-by-day study plan aimed at your weakest topics, with a practice paper the day before each exam.

How the AI marking works

Each written question in Lock in comes with marking criteria and a model answer, the same way a teacher’s marking guide does. When you submit an answer, the AI marks it against those criteria, gives a mark out of the total, and tells you which points you made and which were missing.

Because the criteria are written for the question, the feedback is specific: “add an effect on living conditions, such as overcrowding” rather than “add more detail”. Then you can rewrite your answer and try again.

When you get a multiple choice or short question wrong, Explain my mistake looks at what you answered and explains where your thinking went off track. Ask AI knows the notes for the topic you are studying, so you can ask it to explain the topic another way or to quiz you. The AI in Lock in is powered by Claude, made by Anthropic.

What it can’t do

AI marking and AI answers can make mistakes. A mark from Lock in is a guide to how your answer compares with the criteria, not an official result. If feedback looks wrong, check it against your notes or ask your teacher.

Lock in covers the topics in its decks. Your school may order topics differently or set texts the app doesn’t include, so use your own class notes and assessment notifications alongside it.

And it can’t do the work for you. It is built to make you answer questions, because that is what moves your marks.

Subjects and years

Lock in has every core subject from Year 7, full Year 11–12 courses (Maths, English, Biology, Chemistry, Modern History, Business Studies, Legal Studies and PDHPE), and any other subject or uni unit built from your own notes, with new subjects added as they are finished. See the full list with free sample questions on the subjects page, for example Year 9 Maths practice questions or Year 8 Science practice questions.

It runs in your browser, on Mac and on Windows, and your account syncs your progress across devices. Download Lock in or open it straight in the browser.
