Sample questions with answers

Try each question before you open the answer. Written answers show what a full-marks response needs to include.

  1. Question 1. Integers, primes and powersMultiple choice

    Which is the coldest temperature?

    1. A3 °C
    2. B0 °C
    3. C−11 °C
    4. D−2 °C
    Show answer

    C. −11 °C

−11 is furthest left on the number line.

  2. Question 2. Fractions, decimals, percentages and ratiosMultiple choice

    Which fraction is the largest?

    1. A9/20
    2. B2/5
    3. C3/10
    4. D1/2
    Show answer

    D. 1/2

    As twentieths: 8/20, 6/20, 10/20, 9/20.

  3. Question 3. Fractions, decimals, percentages and ratios: percentages3 marks

A shirt is marked at $45. Store A takes 20% off. Store B takes $10 off. Which store gives the cheaper price? Show your working.

Show model answer and marking criteria

    Model answer. Store A: 20% of 45 = 0.2 × 45 = $9, so the price is 45 − 9 = $36. Store B: 45 − 10 = $35. Store B is cheaper by $1.

    A full-marks answer:

    • Store A discount: 20% of 45 = $9, so the price is $36
    • Store B price: 45 − 10 = $35
    • Conclusion: Store B is cheaper (by $1)
  4. Question 4. Algebra, equations and graphsMultiple choice

Which expression means “the product of 6 and t”?

    1. A6 + t
    2. Bt ÷ 6
    3. Ct − 6
    4. D6t
    Show answer

    D. 6t

    Product means multiply.

  5. Question 5. Algebra, equations and graphs: substitution and formulas3 marks

The perimeter of a rectangle is 46 cm. Its length is 15 cm. Write an equation and solve it to find the width w.

Show model answer and marking criteria

    Model answer. Using P = 2l + 2w: 2 × 15 + 2w = 46, so 30 + 2w = 46. Subtract 30: 2w = 16. Divide by 2: w = 8. The width is 8 cm. Check: 2 × 15 + 2 × 8 = 46.

    A full-marks answer:

    • Equation: 2 × 15 + 2w = 46 (or 30 + 2w = 46)
    • Solves: 2w = 16
    • w = 8 cm
  6. Question 6. Area, volume, circles and timeMultiple choice

    Area is measured in…

    1. Acm^3
    2. Bcm^2
    3. CmL
    4. Dcm
    Show answer

    B. cm^2

    Square units.

How to study Year 7 Maths

Write every line of working, not just the answer. Most marks in a Maths exam are for method, so a correct final number with no working can lose marks, and a small slip with clear working usually keeps most of them. When you get one wrong, redo it from a blank page a day later.

In Lock in, every Maths topic has short notes, then flashcards that use spaced repetition: rate each card Again, Hard, Good or Easy and it comes back just before you would forget it. Practice questions come in three levels, Foundation, Standard and Complex. Three right in a row moves you up a level, and two wrong moves you back.

Press Study for me and the app builds a 15 to 20 minute session from the cards that are due, the mistakes that are due and questions on your weakest topics. Anything you get wrong comes back 1, 3 and 7 days later until you get it right. When an exam is close, sit a timed practice exam with AI marking.
