Sample questions with answers

4 multiple choice and 2 written questions. Try each one before you open the answer. Written answers show the model answer and what a full-marks response needs.

  1. Question 1. Formulae and equationsMultiple choice

An adult dose is 350 mg. Clark’s rule for a 35 kg child gives…

    1. A35 mg
    2. B350 mg
    3. C70 mg
    4. D175 mg
    Show answer

    D. 175 mg

    35/70 = 1/2.

  2. Question 2. Linear relationshipsMultiple choice

    Which is NOT direct variation?

    1. Ay = 0.3x
    2. By = 2x + 1
    3. Cy = 5x
    4. Dy = x
    Show answer

    B. y = 2x + 1

It does not pass through the origin.

  3. Question 3. Linear relationships: linear models3 marks

Two electricians charge: A, $60 call-out plus $70 per hour; B, $100 call-out plus $60 per hour. When are they equal, and which is cheaper for a 6-hour job?

Show model answer and marking criteria

    Model answer. Equal when 60 + 70h = 100 + 60h, so 10h = 40 and h = 4 hours. For 6 hours: A costs 60 + 420 = $480 and B costs 100 + 360 = $460, so B is cheaper.

    A full-marks answer:

    • 60 + 70h = 100 + 60h
    • h = 4 hours
    • At 6 hours: A $480, B $460, so B is cheaper
  4. Question 4. Applications of measurement and timeMultiple choice

    Which measurement is most precise?

    1. A3.21 m
    2. B3.215 m
    3. C3 m
    4. D3.2 m
    Show answer

    B. 3.215 m

    Smallest unit.

  5. Question 5. Applications of measurement and time: units and energy3 marks

A family runs a 2400 W clothes dryer for 1.5 hours, 4 times a week. At 32 cents per kWh, find the yearly cost (52 weeks).

Show model answer and marking criteria

    Model answer. Each use uses 2400 × 1.5 ÷ 1000 = 3.6 kWh. Over a year: 3.6 × 4 × 52 = 748.8 kWh. Cost = 748.8 × 0.32 = $239.62 (to the nearest cent).

    A full-marks answer:

    • Each use: 2.4 × 1.5 = 3.6 kWh
    • Yearly energy 3.6 × 4 × 52 = 748.8 kWh
    • Cost 748.8 × 0.32 = $239.62
  6. Question 6. Money mattersMultiple choice

    $25 per hour for 12 hours is…

    1. A$312
    2. B$250
    3. C$300
    4. D$37
    Show answer

    C. $300

How to study Year 11 Maths Standard

Most marks come from applying a method to a real situation: a loan, a network, a data set. Write the formula, substitute with units and say what the answer means in context. Practise with your formula sheet so you know where everything is before the exam.

Press Study for me and the app builds a 15 to 20 minute session from the cards that are due, the mistakes that are due and questions on your weakest topics. Practice questions come in three levels, and anything you get wrong comes back 1, 3 and 7 days later until you get it right. When an exam is close, sit a timed practice exam with AI marking.

Your state, your exam

Maths Standard goes by different names around Australia. In the app the course shows under your state’s name: NSW: Maths Standard; VIC, QLD, SA, TAS, ACT, NT: General Mathematics; WA: Mathematics Applications.

When you set up Year 11, you pick your state (NSW, VIC, QLD, SA, WA, TAS, ACT or NT) and your subjects. The AI then pitches explanations and marking at your certificate’s level. Courses differ between states, so compare the units above with your course outline, and turn your class notes into extra decks for anything that’s different.
