Distinguish between renewable, non-renewable and continuous resources. Give an example of each.
Show model answer and marking criteria
Model answer. Renewable resources replace themselves naturally over time if we do not use them too quickly, such as forests or fresh water. Non-renewable resources exist in limited amounts and will eventually run out, such as coal and oil. Continuous resources are unlimited and will never run out no matter how much we use them, such as solar and wind energy.
A full-marks answer:
- Renewable: replaced naturally over time if not overused, e.g. fresh water/forests
- Non-renewable: finite, will run out, e.g. coal/oil
- Continuous: unlimited, never runs out, e.g. sun/wind
-
Which BOLTS feature explains what the symbols on a map mean?

Explain the difference between orographic and convectional rainfall.
Show model answer and marking criteria
Model answer. All rain forms when moist air rises, cools and condenses. In orographic rainfall the air is forced to rise because mountains are in its way; it rains on the windward side and the far side is a dry rain shadow. In convectional rainfall the ground heats the air during the day, making it rise rapidly and condense high up, which produces heavy rain and thunderstorms.
A full-marks answer:
- Both happen when moist air rises and cools, causing condensation
- Orographic: air is forced to rise over mountains; dry rain shadow on the other side
- Convectional: the ground heats air which rises quickly, causing heavy rain/thunderstorms
-
Which is a non-renewable resource?
- AOil
- BFresh water
- CSolar energy
- DTimber
Show answer
A. Oil
Oil is finite.
